What does it take to develop players who can compete with the best water polo nations in the world?

In Part 2 of my conversation with Jack Kocur, I talk about the development of USA Water Polo, the importance of European experience and why mindset and adaptability are becoming just as important as physical skills.

Jack explains how young American players benefit from competing in Europe, where they face more speed, physicality and tactical complexity. Learning to adapt, deal with failure and make better decisions under pressure is an essential part of their development.

For Jack, modern player development is not only about swimming, strength and technique. Players need cognitive awareness, the ability to anticipate situations and the confidence to learn from mistakes.

Jack also reflects on his experiences at three Olympic Games – London, Rio and Paris – and how they shaped him as a coach.
He speaks openly about difficult moments during the Rio Olympics and how he learned to better manage his emotions and focus on what the team needs. One principle has become particularly important to his coaching philosophy:

Connect before you direct

Coaches need to understand their athletes, build relationships and adapt their communication instead of treating every player the same way. For young players dreaming of reaching the highest level, Jack's advice is simple: consistency. Becoming an elite athlete is not something you switch on for training – it is a lifestyle.

And his advice for young coaches is equally clear: Stop trying to be somebody else.

Learn from great coaches, but find your own voice and develop an authentic coaching style.
